Pathway to Bariatric Surgery

We have outlined the pathways to your LILD Surgical Weight Loss Experience below.   • 1. Register to attend one of our free educational seminars. At Long Island Laparoscopic Doctorssm we offer several choices to get you on your pathway to weight loss surgery. You are able to attend an In-Person Seminar or an On-Line Seminar, and if you are not yet ready for a Seminar, you can schedule a consult (1-855-7-Surgery) and proceed without either to start. Simply follow the easy four step process below to get started on your Pathway to Surgery.
  • 2. Schedule an Initial Consultation and Verify Insurance Coverage. You may call your insurance company to verify that they cover bariatric surgery. If you do not have insurance coverage, LILD offers a convenient financing program and offers a cash payment discount. While it is not a necessary step in the Pathway process, if you plan to go through your health insurance for coverage of surgery, we will verify your benefits for you. We will communicate to you both your benefits and any specific criteria which must be met for your insurance plan to cover surgery.   • If you plan to self pay, please contact 1-855-7- Surgery directly to set up your consultation. Check out our easy, affordable patient financing options

  • 3. Pre-Operative Testing and Education Class: After a complete examination, your surgeon will discuss surgical weight loss options and order the required pre-operative tests. You will need to attend a 4-hour education class at St. Charles hospital which will cover:
    • Two-week pre-operative diet
    • Post-operative dietary progression
    • What to expect at the hospital
    • Signs & symptoms of complications
    • Importance of exercise
    • Social & Emotional Changes
  • 4. Preregister & Surgery: Preregister with St. Charles Hospital (or one of our other affiliated institutions) Surgery - patients are discharged after 1-2 nights in the hospital. Follow-Up Appointments & Support Group Meetings: Keep follow-up appointments with your surgeon. Attend monthly support group meetings.

Once you decide to become a patient after attending a seminar, you will have a consultation with one of our surgeons; Heshman M. Atwa, M.D. FACS, Karim A. Paracha, M.D, during which he will evaluate your candidacy for surgical weight loss determine which approach is most appropriate for you. You will also meet the rest of our team and receive additional educational information about the surgery or tailored weight loss program.

Once the bariatric surgery consultation is complete, a medical examination process will follow. This will include a psychological evaluation, a number of pre-operative tests, and a request for medical clearance from your Primary Care Physician.
